Background

What Is AHPRA and Why Does It Matter?

The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) is the national organisation responsible for implementing the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme across Australia. Every doctor who wishes to practise medicine in Australia — whether trained domestically or overseas — must hold current registration with AHPRA through the Medical Board of Australia.

For international medical graduates (IMGs), AHPRA registration involves demonstrating that your qualifications, clinical experience, and English language proficiency meet Australian standards. The process is governed by the Australian Medical Council (AMC), which assesses overseas-trained doctors via the Standard Pathway or the Competent Authority Pathway.

Why Australia? Australian doctors benefit from some of the world's highest salaries, excellent working conditions, strong professional autonomy, and a quality of life consistently ranked among the best globally. With ongoing workforce shortages — particularly in regional and rural areas — demand for skilled overseas-trained doctors remains high throughout 2026 and beyond.
AHPRA fees at a glance (2025/26). General registration carries an annual fee of around A$1,058 (it varies slightly by state). International medical graduates on the standard AMC pathway should budget roughly A$8,000–A$12,000 in total once AMC exam fees, registration and primary-source verification are included. AHPRA Pathways

Three Routes to AHPRA Registration

Understanding which pathway applies to you is the most important first step. Your country of training and existing registration determine the right route.

Fastest for UK doctors
A

Competent Authority Pathway

4–8 months
  • For doctors with full, unconditional registration in a Competent Authority country: UK (GMC), USA (ECFMG/state licence), Canada (LMCC), Ireland (IMC), or New Zealand (MCNZ)
  • No AMC examinations required
  • Significantly faster and less expensive
  • Still requires primary source verification, English language (if applicable), and criminal history check
Ava tip: UK GMC-registered doctors should almost always use this pathway. We confirm eligibility in your first consultation.
B

Standard Pathway

12–18 months
  • For graduates of any medical school listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools
  • Must hold a primary qualification that entitles you to practise in the country of award
  • Requires passing AMC CAT (computer adaptive MCQ, AUD ~$3,340) and AMC Clinical Examination (OSCE, AUD ~$4,610)
  • On passing both, you receive an AMC Certificate — the prerequisite for AHPRA general registration
Ava tip: We connect you with AMC preparation courses and study groups, and match you to hospital roles while you prepare.
C

Specialist Pathway

6–18 months
  • For consultants and specialists with qualifications assessed as substantially comparable by the relevant Australian specialist college (e.g. RACS, RACP, RANZCOG, RANZCP)
  • No AMC exams if specialist registration is granted
  • "Partially comparable" assessments may require additional supervised practice
  • Assessment requirements and fees vary by college and specialty
Ava tip: We assist with college application paperwork and identify hospital positions that accommodate conditional specialist registration arrangements.
Step by Step

Your AHPRA Registration Pathway

Follow these eight steps from eligibility check to practising in an Australian hospital. Timelines are indicative and depend on your pathway and individual circumstances.

1
Step 1 · 2–4 weeks

Check Eligibility & Choose Your Pathway

Determine which AMC pathway is right for you based on your country of training and existing registrations. If you hold full GMC registration, the Competent Authority Pathway is almost always the fastest route. For all others, the Standard Pathway via AMC examinations is the primary option.

Ava does: Free eligibility review and personalised pathway recommendation during your first consultation.
2
Step 2 · 1–3 months

Meet English Language Requirements

The Medical Board of Australia requires evidence of English language proficiency. Accepted tests and minimum scores:

  • IELTS Academic: Overall 7.0 with minimum 7.0 in each component (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking)
  • OET Medicine: Grade B (350) in each component — recommended for clinicians
  • PTE Academic: Overall 65 with minimum 65 in each skill
  • TOEFL iBT: Total 94 (minimum 24 listening, 24 reading, 27 writing, 23 speaking)

Doctors who completed their entire medical qualification in English in an approved country (UK, Ireland, USA, Canada, NZ, South Africa) may be exempt.

Ava tip: OET is recommended for most doctors — it tests English in a clinical context, making preparation more directly relevant to your daily practice.
3
Step 3 · 2–4 months

Primary Source Verification & Document Preparation

Before applying to the AMC or AHPRA, your qualifications must be verified directly with the issuing institutions. Required documents typically include:

  • Primary medical degree certificate and academic transcript (verified from your medical school)
  • Current and previous medical registrations with certificates of good standing
  • Passport, birth certificate and recent photographs
  • Detailed CV covering all medical education, training and employment history
  • Specialist qualifications, if applicable (verified by relevant college)
  • Australian National Police Check and, where required, international criminal record checks
Ava tip: Start this step early — obtaining primary source verification from overseas medical schools can take 8–12 weeks. We provide a personalised document checklist to every doctor we work with.
4
Step 4 · 3–8 months (Standard Pathway only)

AMC Examinations

If you are following the Standard Pathway, you must pass two AMC examinations. Competent Authority Pathway doctors skip this step.

  • AMC CAT (Computer Adaptive Test): 150-question MCQ covering all clinical specialties. Delivered at Pearson VUE centres worldwide. Fee approx. AUD $3,340. First-time pass rate approximately 50–55%.
  • AMC Clinical Examination: 16-station OSCE at designated Australian centres. Fee approx. AUD $4,610. Tests clinical competence, communication, and scenario management.

On passing both, you receive an AMC Certificate — the prerequisite for AHPRA general registration.

Ava tip: Many doctors sit the CAT before relocating and prepare for the Clinical Examination after arriving in Australia. We can help coordinate your preparation resources.
5
Step 5 · 4–8 weeks

Apply to AHPRA for Medical Registration

Submit your online AHPRA application with your AMC Certificate or competent authority verification. AHPRA offers four main registration types for IMGs:

  • General Registration: Full independent practice. Requires AMC Certificate or Competent Authority Pathway completion plus 12 months supervised practice.
  • Specialist Registration: Independent specialist practice. Requires comparable specialist qualifications recognised by the relevant Australian college.
  • Provisional Registration: For AMC Certificate holders who have not completed an internship equivalent. Requires supervised practice.
  • Limited Registration: For specific approved positions (often rural/regional area of need). Does not always require AMC exams. Renewable annually.

AHPRA initial registration fee approx. AUD $820. Processing 4–8 weeks.

Ava tip: Many of our partner hospitals can sponsor you under limited registration (area of need), significantly accelerating the process for rural and regional positions.
6
Step 6 · 4–12 weeks

Visa Sponsorship & Immigration

To work in Australia you need an appropriate work visa. The most common options for sponsored IMG doctors:

  • Subclass 482 — Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS): Up to 4 years with an approved employer, with pathway to permanent residency. Medical practitioners are on the MLTSSL.
  • Subclass 494 — Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional: For regional areas. Pathway to permanent residency after 3 years. Faster processing and additional incentives in many areas.
  • Subclass 186 — Employer Nomination Scheme: Direct permanent residency via the Temporary Residence Transition stream (after 3 years on a 482) or Direct Entry stream.

Note: overseas-trained doctors may be subject to Section 19AB Medicare restrictions (the "10-year moratorium"), requiring work in Distribution Priority Areas to access Medicare provider numbers for private billing. Doctors in public hospital salaried positions are not affected.

Ava tip: All our Australian partner hospitals offer full visa sponsorship. We coordinate directly with hospital HR and immigration agents.
7
Step 7 · 2–6 weeks

Common Questions

AHPRA Registration FAQ

Answers to the questions we hear most often from international doctors considering the move to Australia.

For the Standard Pathway (AMC exams), expect approximately 12–18 months from initial application to receiving your AHPRA registration. The Competent Authority Pathway is significantly faster — often 4–8 months — since no examinations are required. Your English language preparation time is additional and varies by individual.
You cannot practise medicine without AHPRA registration. However, if you have a job offer from an Australian hospital, they may apply for limited registration on your behalf, which can be processed relatively quickly. Some employers also offer pre-arrival administrative start dates. Once you hold any form of AHPRA registration and a valid work visa, you can begin clinical work in the approved capacity.
As a GMC-registered doctor, you are eligible for the Competent Authority Pathway — the fastest route to AHPRA registration. You will not need to sit AMC examinations. You will still need primary source verification, a criminal history check, and to confirm English language proficiency (UK-trained doctors are often exempt). Many UK doctors complete the process within 4–6 months. Upload your CV and we will provide a personalised timeline.
The AMC (Australian Medical Council) is the assessment body that evaluates whether your medical qualifications and skills meet Australian standards. They administer the AMC CAT and Clinical examinations and manage the Competent Authority Pathway. AHPRA is the registration body that issues your licence to practise. Think of the AMC as the gatekeeper verifying your competence, and AHPRA as the authority issuing your registration. You must satisfy the AMC requirements before AHPRA will grant your registration.
Not necessarily. If applying for specialist registration, your qualifications are assessed by the relevant Australian specialist college (e.g. RACP for physicians, RACS for surgeons, RANZCOG for O&G). If deemed "substantially comparable," you may be granted specialist registration without AMC exams. If "partially comparable," additional supervised practice or assessments may be required. Requirements vary by college and specialty.
Indicative 2026 salary ranges (AUD, before tax): Resident/Junior HO: $90,000–$120,000; Registrar: $130,000–$200,000; Staff Specialist (Consultant): $250,000–$450,000+; GP: $200,000–$400,000+ depending on billing model and location. Salaries are typically higher in regional and rural areas. Most positions also include superannuation (currently 11.5%), paid leave, and professional development allowances. See our NHS vs Australia salary comparison for a detailed breakdown.
Yes. Most work visas (Subclass 482 and 494) allow you to include dependent family members. Your spouse or partner will typically receive a visa with full work rights in any occupation. Dependent children can be enrolled in Australian schools. Adding dependants typically costs AUD $2,000–$3,000 per additional person. Many of our partner hospitals provide family relocation support, including accommodation and school enrolment guidance.
Ava Medical provides comprehensive, end-to-end support: free eligibility assessment; personalised document checklists; AMC preparation resources; direct hospital matching across all states and territories; visa sponsorship coordination; contract review; and ongoing relocation support.
